Color of Rhythm is a progressive jazz group based in Brooklyn, NY. With handpan at its center, the band molds rich sonic textures driven by polyrhythms, odd time signatures and metric modulations to create thought provoking, yet palatable songwriting.
Initially a solo project developed by drummer & percussionist Jordan Auber in 2017, Color of Rhythm has grown to include a core instrumentation of handpan, drumset and electric bass. Life-long friend and regular collaborator, Colin Taylor, joined as drummer in 2019 after an 18-month national tour with the hit Broadway show, On Your Feet. Having studied music together for over a decade, Auber and Taylor’s synergy of collective ideas and experiences shine through the arrangements.
Also contributing as an integral member of the current roster is bassist and producer Chris Gaskell. Color of Rhythm’s upcoming sophomore release, Change of State, was recorded and co-produced at Gaskell’s Cloud Union Studio in Brooklyn, NY. Together, the group embodies an honest and intriguing expression of combined musical backgrounds, breathing new life into Auber’s compositions.
Auber’s pursuit of expanding the perceived limitations of the handpan serves as the foundation of CoR’s experimentation. Driving drums and bass defy the more stripped down and relaxed contexts commonly associated with the budding instrument. At times even going as far as to disguise the meter, the rhythm section creates an illusory backdrop for the unique timbre and cyclical melodies of the pan.
While steeped in mind-numbing twists and turns, Color of Rhythm is still accessible to the common listener. Modern with reverence to worldly traditions, they bend time and sustain an element of mysticism. From calming, ethereal passages to more robust and jagged segments, the group cultivates an equally exciting and inviting musical journey.
